Capoeira Angola is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines graceful movements, percussive instrumentation, and call-and-response songs into a “beautiful game” that is practiced within a roda or circle of participants.
Capoeira was developed by enslaved Africans from Angola and the Congo, who brought their fighting, dance and music traditions with them to Brazil.
It’s considered the art of cultural liberation as it was born out of a deep desire for freedom, an ethos that remains an integral component of capoeira to this day.
Capoeira Angola Center Kibera was established by Contra Mestre Salim, a disciple of the renowned Grand Mestre João Grande since 1995. As the first African branch of Mestre João’s Capoeira Angola Center, CAC Kibera plays an important role in reconnecting Capoeira Angola with its ancestral roots on the continent of Africa.
